Beyond Our Imagination
by Emily Thigpen
As a kid I really wished that I could move the stars in the sky and see heaven behind them. I wanted to see an explosion of light, see the heavenly kingdom with Christ on His throne, and everything He has created that is far beyond our imagination. In this painting I included the pink, purple, and white of advent which help to convey the longing for Christ's second coming and to be in His presence. The heavens (or space) are rolled back to reveal heaven itself. Heaven is shown only with light bursting forth. The inspiration behind "Beyond Our Imagination" is from Isaiah 51:6 ESV which says,
"Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look at the earth beneath;
for the heavens vanish like smoke,
the earth will wear out like a garment,
and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;
but my salvation will be forever,
and my righteousness will never be dismayed."
And the imagery comes from other verses talking about the end of the earth such as Revelation 6:14 and Isaiah 34:4, which describe the heavens being rolled up like a scroll. The style itself was entirely new to me. I just knew that I wanted to convey space being ripped apart by light, as well as the excitement and hope for Christ's return. And of course my wonderful husband was more than happy to punch a canvas for me.
