Our baptism classes are beginning soon!

Sign-ups are open until February 19th!

Our 6-week baptism class will be held between services on Sundays, during coffee hour (9:55-10:35), from February 26 to  April 4.

This will be a rewarding experience - fun and practical - for anyone interested in getting baptized this year. We will cover

"How do I.. .enter God's family, worship, pray, study the Bible, build community, do outreach, and be baptized."

We will hear personal testimonies, cover Scripture lessons with the pastoral team, participate in a prayer and fasting retreat, discuss your faith with another, and, of course, drink coffee.

If you would like to participate in this baptism class, please email Pastor Matt Traylor at matt.traylor@holytrinityanglicanchurch.org.

This class is for anyone who wants to be baptized, anyone who might want their children baptized, anyone exploring the Christian faith, or anyone who is still discerning if they or their children want to be baptized.

The class will be in preparation for our next baptisms, which will be held on Easter Sunday.

Thursday Spotlight: Refugee Ministries Edition

HTAC launched our refugee and immigrant ministry in 2022, and it has been exciting to see the Lord move, as we serve our new neighbors both financially and with our time.  Here are a few highlights!

Prisca, Noella and Console

HTAC purchased a washing machine and dressers for Prisca and her family to help them furnish their brand new Habitat for Humanity home!

Prisca, Noella and Console are refugees from the Central African Republic who arrived in Colorado 5 years ago. They have been living in a dangerous and unsanitary apartment for the past several years, but were selected for a Habitat for Humanity home.

They poured 200 hours of sweat equity (each!), along with a whole village of people, into the construction of their new home, and they moved in December.

Prisca has never lived in a home with her own washer/dryer, so this was a beautiful gift for their family.  A week after moving in, Prisca said that she realized she hasn't slept well in 5 years.  Now, she feels safe in her home and can finally rest.  In an exciting bonus, Prisca also became a US citizen in December!

Gift Cards for Cuban Asylees

HTAC donated 250 Walmart gift cards to be given to Cuban asylees through Lutheran Family Services (LFS).

This past year, Colorado Springs has seen an enormous influx of Cuban asylees to our city. These new neighbors are entering the US legally, requesting asylum.  They basically have no support and are unable to work until they find out from the courts whether they have been granted asylum, a process that can take more than a year.

Most survive off the generosity of friends and family. LFS has a services caseload of almost 500 Cubans, with a waitlist of over 250, who have not yet received services.

The gift cards that HTAC donated are being given to Cuban families with children, and pregnant women, to help them get needed household supplies.

Connections with Afghan Families

Family friendships: Several HTAC families have started friendships with Afghan refugees in our community.  Through linkages formed by our Refugee ministry, four families have been paired with Afghan families, and one family is serving as a youth cultural mentor for an Afghan teen.  These relationships allow us to love and serve our new neighbors, many of whom are trying to learn a new culture while carrying significant trauma.  When we serve these refugee friends, we show people Jesus.

Swim lessons for Afghan children: Members of our Holy Trinity family helped an Afghan family apply for swim lesson scholarships so that three of their children could learn to swim.  This family is one of the many who arrived in Colorado Springs since the Afghan evacuation.  Our Refugee team was also able to purchase swim suits for the children, who had never previously experience a swimming pool.

If you are interested in hearing more about Refugee Ministries at Holy Trinity, or if you would like to be involved yourself, please reach out to Amy Schulte or Deacon Mark in the Church Office.

Weekly Update: January 31 to February 5, 2023

Sunday Morning Services: This is the fifth Sunday of Epiphany. We will have two services at our normal times: 8:30 AM and 10:45 AM.

Jack Adams Funeral Service

The funeral service for Jack Adams will be held on Saturday, February 4 from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. The service will take place at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs 80903. A reception will follow the service.
This is a public service, and all are welcome.

Thursday Spotlight: Hospitality Special Edition

2023 is going to be a banner year for community and hospitality events at Holy Trinity.

Last Sunday, we had our first major event: the Annual Chili Cookoff and Potluck Lunch. It was amazing! We enjoyed 14 chili entries for the cookoff, and Tim Peterson's chili won over the judges to take a strong win for best chili of the day.

For the year ahead, we currently have 9 additional community gatherings already on the calendar. Here's the list:

  • 21 February - Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper (6 PM)

  • 16 April - Easter Feast Potluck Brunch (11 AM)

  • 30 April - 5th Sunday Potluck Brunch (11 AM)

  • 30 July - 5th Sunday Potluck Brunch (11 AM)

  • 3 September - Joint service and picnic in the Park with IAC

  • 29 October - 5th Sunday Potluck Brunch (11 AM)

  • 26 November - Hanging of the Greens (6 PM)

  • 24 December - Christmas Eve Supper Gathering (between services)

  • 31 December - 5th Sunday Potluck Brunch (11 AM)

Each of these events is an amazing opportunity to reach out to the neighborhoods that surround Holy Trinity and to forge strong bonds of friendship within our Church family.

To make all of these events happen, we need your help!

If you have the gifting of hospitality, if you are a planner and a make-things-happen kind of person, would you please consider signing up to be the event coordinator for one or more of these gatherings?

What would you be signing up to do?

Here's a brief description:  "Coordinating" an event means helping to recruit people to do setup beforehand and cleanup afterwards, making sure we have the supplies we need, deciding what we want people to bring, and then “directing traffic” on the day of the event to make sure it goes smoothly. We need a person who will “take point” to think through how best to pull off the event and then marshalling the resources needed to help it all come together.

If you are willing to be the event coordinator for one or more of these planned gatherings, please reach out to Deacon Mark in the Church Office to sign up.

If you don't have the space or the giftings to take on the coordinator role, please mark your calendar for these events in 2023. And when the event coordinators make the call for volunteers to help with particular tasks, please be open to the call and sign on to support the coordinators with your time and efforts.

Blessings to all!

Second Sunday Stories: Beatitude Care Foundation

We are thrilled that Stewart and Terrie Abbott of Beatitude Care Foundation will be our Second Sunday Story this coming Sunday (January 8) between our two morning services! Pastor Chris Stroup will moderate a conversation with these ministry leaders about their Foundation and the work they are doing in Nigeria.

BCF has establish a health care clinic - the Beatitude Care Clinic - in Egbelu Nguru, Imo State, in Nigeria. Holy Trinity supported Beatitude Care Foundation financially through our Outreach funds during 2022.

Also participating this Sunday will be Father Tochwuchu (John) Nkwocha, a Catholic Priest from Nigeria, who is currently serving in Pueblo, Colorado. Stewart and Terrie and Father John will share their dream and their story of establishing a maternity and children's clinic in Egbelu, Nigeria.

Here is an additional excerpt from the BCF website:

Beatitude Care Center will be located in Egbelu Nguru. This is one of five villages in Nguru Umuaro, in the Ngor Okpala region of Imo State, Nigeria that will be served by the health center. The other villages are Eziala Nguru, Amaibo Nguru, Umuaga Nguru and Umeuewere Nguru.  Each has a population of about 250-300 people, mostly subsistance farmers.

We are using the community building in Egbelu for health screening clinics prior to completion of the Center. The village head and elders have been most gracious and accomodating of our plan. We plan to have a steering committee of one man and one woman from each village.

The capital of Imo State is Owerri, about 45 minutes away by poor roads, occasionally impassable for mud and flooding. With a population of just over 400,000, Owerri has several hospitals. Unfortunately, all of them, including the Federal hospital, require up front payment prior to any medical services.

Nigeria is made up of over 500 ethnic groups.  The Igbo people are the main ethnic group in Imo State, accounting for 98% of the population.  English is the official language with most people also speaking Igbo.  The average income in Imo State is $3527 per year.

The maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world - 814 per 100K.  The chance of a woman dying in pregnancy or childbirth is 1 in 13. That amounts to 145 women a day, or one woman every 10 minutes, dying from pregnancy and childbirth complications.  That is 40 times the US average and 80 times the Colorado average.  That makes it the 11th most dangerous place in the world to give birth.  Imo State has a maternal mortality rate of 900, slightly higher than the national average.  Nigeria accounts for 10% of global maternal deaths.

Nigeria also has the highest number of newborn deaths in Africa, 48 per 1000, or 700 a day.  The mortality rate for children under five is the second highest in the world.  Every day 2300 children die, mostly of preventable diseases.

Please join us for this amazing story of God's care and provision and to support and encourage the Abbotts and Father John in their efforts to make a difference for villagers in Nigeria.

Both services will also include a candlelight closing to the liturgy.

Christmas Morning Service: Christmas falls on a Sunday, this year, so we will have a single Communion service on Christmas Day, beginning at 10 AM. As we always do on Christmas morning, we invite you to “come as you are." Wear your pajamas. The kids can bring a toy. And we'll all enjoy the very special worship that happens on the morning we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus.

All services on Christmas weekend will be broadcast via Zoom. The links to the individual services are listed on the “Zoom Links” page of our website.

A Message of Thanks from Terry Brubaker and the Soli Deo Gloria choir

It was great to see a number of HTAC members at the SDG concert on Saturday, 17 December. I hope you were blessed by your choice to come. If you didn't attend and would like to see this concert (or want to see it again), it was live streamed and recorded. The link is below.

Also, we have just released the videos from our concert in May and that link is below also (and you can see Terri Moon in this one!). The professional recording turned out fairly well. The sections in the playlist for this concert will automatically play or you can skip ahead to any of the pieces. If you have time to sit and watch either or both of these concerts at some point, then consider this our SDG choir's Christmas gift to you!

The third and final installment of Glenn Paauw's adult discipleship class on “The Humanity of Jesus” will happen this coming Sunday (Dec 18) at 9:50 AM (between Sunday services) in the Holy Trinity Sanctuary. Here's a brief description of the class.

The Humanity of Jesus

When faithful Christians saw the doctrine of the divinity of Jesus being threatened, they responded by re-emphasizing this classic, orthodox element of the faith. But have we lost sight of the humanity of Jesus? Does it really matter?

Here’s what we’ll explore in this three-week Advent series:

Dec 4    The kind of human the story is looking for.

Dec 11    The human Jesus who was with us

Dec 18    The human Jesus who will be with us

The videos of the first two sessions have been posted on the HTAC website, so if you missed either session, you can catch up. Here's the link:

Evening Contemplative Service - December 4

Holy Trinity will host an evening contemplative service in the form of a “Sung Compline” on Sunday, December 4 @ 6:30 PM in the Church Sanctuary.

The service will be led by the HTAC Choir, accompanied by gifted musicians. In addition to the great music, the service will include poetry, visual arts and plenty of space to be with Jesus and to hear the Spirit's voice.

This service is open to all. Please invite your friends and family to join us for a time of reflection and anticipation in this season of Advent.

Check out our Advent Art Pieces

We have received nearly a dozen art pieces on loan for display at the Holy Trinity during Advent.

In addition, we've received a number of excellent Advent playlists on Spotify and are gathering written works - poetry, prose and the like - with Advent-centric themes.

We still have three weeks of Advent ahead of us, so please send us visual art, music or written pieces that reflect your own heart and journey in this season of contemplation “in between” the first coming and the second coming of Jesus.

All of the art works that have been shared with us are posted on our Advent pages on the Holy Trinity Website. You can find the links to the pieces on our home page at www.holytrinityanglican.church.

On Sunday, be sure to check out the art displays in the Sanctuary, in the Fellowship Hall and elsewhere in the building.
