We are one in the Spirit

Acrylic paint on black cardstock

The vision for this piece was inspired by a stained glass window at All Saints Church in Penarth Wales. The Holy Spirit features as a dove at the top from whose wings shards of light spread out even as the figures from below are also reaching up towards the light. The occasional pop of red reminds the viewer of the tongues of fire that appeared at Pentecost.

In collaboration with the kids in Catechesis, I wanted to do a large display that had the look of a stained glass window. Each student painted their individual sheet of pre-taped cardstock. While no pattern was discernible on the individual level, once assembled, all the pieces together formed a beautiful whole. I wanted to not only produce something beautiful to the eyes, I also wanted the process itself to reflect in a small way what it looks like to be a part of the body of Christ. We are all individuals with particular experiences of God and personal stories of faith and yet together, we form the Church in whom the Holy Spirit dwells. None of us are Christians alone.  - Laura Laurie

Tongues of fire

Tissue paper on black card stock

Our youngest students created tongues of fire with tissue paper squares of various colors. Assembled together, they form a kind of burning bush which recalls the strange sight Moses came across in Exodus 3:1-4 of a bush, burning but not consumed through which God spoke. These might also evoke the prayers of the faithful rising to the throne of God and “counted as incense before him” (Psalm 141: 2).
